Wheaton High School

Parent-Teacher-Student Association (PTSA)

This page is intended to provide information about SSL opportunities (75 hours are required for High School graduation), Summer work opportunities, and scholarships

Student Work

PTSA knows that volunteering and work are both valuable to the community and individual students.  The following information is for students needing SSL hours and looking for summer employment opportunities.  Your student needs 75 hours of volunteer work before they are eligible to graduate.  There are lots of opportunities to complete this requirement.  Many in-school and PTSA activities can be eligible, just ask.  When your student is ready, there are also lots of opportunities to work during the summer through the county or through special internships. In addition, scholarships are an important way your student can fund their own education.  Below is just some of the available information and opportunities.

Student Service Learning (SSL)

Montgomery County Public School students address real need in the community by fully participating in service-learning activities that are

  1. embedded in specific middle and high school courses
  2. included in specific school-sponsored clubs and organizations and
  3. supervised by preapproved community organizations.

REMEMBER: All service-learning opportunities in the community must be preapproved. Look for organizations to be tagged, "Approved SSL MCPS" and opportunities to be tagged, "MCPS SSL Approved" on this website. If they are not there then submit MCPS Form 560-50, Request for SSL Preapproval in advance of any service.

Request for SSL Pre approval - Submit this form to your school's SSL coordinator BEFORE the activity if the organization or activity is not listed as Approved for SSL.

Verification Form - Submit this form to your school's SSL coordinator by the end of each semester when service is performed.
